Proud to Own Series
Each week, we highlight a core portfolio holding within our Faith-Based 100 Index, and show why it is a part of our “Proud to Own” universe.
As a reminder, for the company to be included in our “proud to own” universe, it must meet three criteria:
1. It must not violate your faith and values. Some of the types of companies we can avoid include those involved in the abortion industry, those producing explicit entertainment and pornography, those conducting embryonic stem cell and fetal tissue research, companies funding and lobbying for homosexuality, those involved in vices like alcohol, tobacco and gambling and companies that are abusing the environment.
2. It should be a company that complements your faith and values. This involves finding companies: Helping the poor and defenseless; Protecting the sanctity of human life; Producing morally sound entertainment; Finding cures for life threatening diseases; and Improving the society we live in…
3. It should be a company with strong profit potential. This involves finding companies in solid financial condition that have strong profit potential and/or provide strong cash flows via dividends. We use a five-point inspection to evaluate each investment we are considering. We analyze a company’s earnings potential, price momentum, risk, financial health, and its current valuation. Our goal is to find quality companies that stay true to your values AND are profitable! This is not an either /or scenario but rather a winning combination.
This Week’s Highlighted Company
In 2013, one company led a great charge as its late-stage development received the FDA’s Breakthrough Therapy Designation in recognition of its potential in treating millions of sufferers of a common variant of Hepatitis C. In addition to this major breakthrough, this company offers other late-stage drugs, which include new treatments for multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s, multiple myeloma and breast cancer.
The company I am referring to is AbbVie Inc. (NASDAQ: ABBV). It is a part of our Natural Resources Portfolio, which looks at precious metals, agriculture, commodities, energy, and world dominating companies. AbbVie is one of our world dominating health care companies.
Its Hepatitis C treatment is an example of what can result from a well-run business with a skilled approach to research and the patience to guide new therapies through the multiyear process from discovery to final approval. AbbVie was spun off from the 125-year-old Abbott Laboratories at the beginning of 2013 and it has been making impressive gains since then. Its entire focus is on discovering and bringing new drugs to market, AbbVie combines the expertise of a proven pharmaceutical leader with the focus and passion of an entrepreneur and innovator. The result is something rare in health care today – a global biopharmaceutical company that has the ability to discover and advance innovative therapies and meet the health needs of people and societies around the globe.
Innovation and life saving medicine
When it comes to innovating, AbbVie starts with the patient. It draws on its deep expertise in some of the most difficult-to-treat diseases and on its understanding of the patient journey to identify opportunities to create better outcomes at every stage. This patient-centered approach to discovery and development ensures Abbvie remains focused on its goal of improving lives.
People today live longer, healthier lives, but along with a longer life expectancy comes a higher prevalence of chronic disease. Abbvie takes a broad perspective on improving healthcare and is committed to new thinking and approaches; it strives to find new solutions that will enable healthcare systems to bring medical innovation to more patients cost effectively.
In addition to company initiatives to significantly reduce its own carbon and energy footprint, AbbVie has provided thousands of compounds for testing as part of the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative, which works to fight Chagas Disease and other maladies that disproportionately affect the world’s poor.
A “Proud to Own” Company
Because the company has a clear vision, is creating life saving medicine and conducting important research, and has a strong commitment to social responsibility, Abbvie (ABBV) is a company we can be “proud to own”.
